Grandparents’ leave – yippee!

At the Conservative party conference this week, George Osborne announced that the Government intends to bring forward proposals to allow eligibility for shared parental leave to include working grandparents. The intention is for this to be in place from 2018 (one assumes April). A consultation is planned for the early part of next year.

George Osborne has been urged not to make the legislation complex; he probably has no idea that it is already complex without injecting another employee type into the mix. Presumably only two employees or an employed grandparent and self-employed parent/adopter can be eligible not Mum, Dad and Grandparents!! It would be good too if by 2018 the Government would provide some statutory forms to allow employers to handle all the scenarios that can arise including/excluding employees from sharing.
